Users can now define custom IDs for use in HTML export.
These IDs are stores as property CUSTOM_ID. When present, HTML will
prefer using these over automatic targets like "sec-N.M".

These problems were caused by a regular expression for
matching latex macros with arguments, that did not allow any
newlines. Now we have a much better regexp, that even
allows for three levels of nested braces.
Move the point to the selected task when clocking in using the clock
history. I find I'm always going to the currently clocked task after
picking it off of the menu and this saves one small step.
This could be optionally controlled by a variable.
Sometimes refiling a task displays the next task heading after ... at the
end of a folded task. This keeps the next task the cursor is on starting
in column 1 which feels more natural.
If the heading field in the remember template entry is either `top' or
`bottom', it is now OK to file to a file that is not in org mode, and
the content of the remember buffer is inserted without forcing an
Org-style header.

remote().

This commit makes sure that references inside calls to
remote() are not touched.
sha1-string is not autoloaded in sha1.el as in the version distributed
with Emacs 22. Instead of relying on autoloads, the sha1 library is
now required by org-feed.el.
When refiling, you can now create new parent nodes on the fly. To do
this, set the variable `org-refile-allow-creating-parent-nodes' to
`confirm'. Then, at a refiling prompt, proceed with completion until
you have an existing heading, and then add "/new heading", i.e. a
slash followed by the new heading. That heading will be created as a
child of the existing heading, and the entry to be refiled will end up
under that new heading.
New wrapper span around keyword plus time stamp, with class
timestamp-wrapper.
.timestamp-wrapper {float: right;}
could be a nice entry in a CSS style file.

This commit fixes the problem, in a slightly different way
than Adam proposed. Instead of trying to fix the old way to
find the position of the clock, we now simple search the
entry if there is an unfinished clock and go there. Since
new clocks are added before older ones, this should be a
safe bet.
Time stamps in LaTeX export now also honor custom time stamp formats.
Furthermore, the new option `org-export-latex-timestamp-markup' can
specify special markup for time stamps.
Some of the standard export options are now defined in backend
specific files. This commit makes sure that building the options
property list will not cause an error because of unneeded (for the
backend) undefined variables.

Both problems are address in this commit.
Remember and refile processing does not require a task. This change
removes the unneeded default task.
This supports a workflow where new remember tasks and notes go into a
mostly empty file which just has #+FILETAGS: at the top and nothing
else.
This workflow has a minimal number of remember templates
- one for new tasks and (filed in tasks.org)
- one for new notes (filed in notes.org)
- one for phone calls (filed in phone.org)
New tasks are added as top-level tasks to the end of these files and
the #+FILETAGS: REFILE header causes each task to be easy to find.
All tasks in these files are refiled to a more appropriate org file at
a later time.
The following contributed packages are (partially) obsolete.
org-browser-url.el
org-annotation-helper.el
The functionality of both these packages is a subset of
org-protocol.el, which is now part of the Emacs core
and is recommended.
org-depend.el
A significant fraction of the org-depend functionality
dependence on siblings, children, and parents) is now
built-in into the Org core. Org-depend remains
in the distribution as a proof-of-concept fro complex
and remote dependencies.
org-interactive-query.el
I believe that much of what this package was build for
is now available with tag filtering.
These packages are now marked in org-modules as such.
The command org-reload did not only reload any loaded files, but all
lisp files in the Org distribution. Also, it actually never reloaded
any files from the contrib directory. Both of these problems are now
fixed.
Mapping call a function for each matching entry. So far this has
always assumed that the entry stays in the buffer and search can
continue from there. However, when the mapper function removes the
tree, more control is needed to specify from where the search should
continue.
The action function handed to the mapping function can now set the
variable `org-map-continue-from' to the position from where mapping
should continue.

After some back and forth, Daniel convinced me, and this is now done
correctly.
If the trigger for a log mode entry in the agenda has notes, for
example a note associated with a state change or with a clock entry,
the first line of the notes will now be added to the logbook entry.
You can turn this off the with new variable
`org-agenda-log-mode-add-notes'.
The annotation and initial contents for a remember template are
normally taken from the variables `annotation' and `initial', which
are bound by remember. We now also check the property list for such
values, so that the link generating routine can force the right values
in there.
With the setting
(setq org-refile-use-outline-path 'file)
the file names ended up twice, like
"xxx.org/level 1/level 2 (xxx.org)"
Now the second occurrence is omitted.
During secondary agenda filtering, pressing "?" now will install a
filter that selects entries which do not have an effort defined.
This new model was necessary because we needed to stop interpreting
entries with no effort defines as 0 effort. This was inconsistent,
because for normal agenda sorting, the treatment of these entries
depends on the variable `org-sort-agenda-noeffort-is-high'. Now this
variable is also respected during filtering.

This module implements inline tasks in Org-mode. Inline tasks are
tasks that have all the properties of normal outline nodes, including
the ability to store meta data like scheduling dates, TODO state, tags
and properties. However, these nodes are treated specially by the
visibility cycling and export commands.
The name of the feed status drawer can now be configured, and each
feed can use a different name. This will allow to point several feeds
at the same inbox heading.
RefTeX can now be used to create a citation in Org-mode buffers.
Setup the buffer with #+BIBLIOGRAPHY: bibbase style
and create citations with `C-c C-x ['.
The new variable `org-agenda-cmp-user-defined' can contain a function
to test how two entries should be compared during sorting.
user-defined-up and user-defined-down can then be part of any sorting
strategy.
This now keep a memory of what the items in the feed looked like using
a sha1 hash. Therefore we now have the capability to trigger on item
*change* rather than addition.

The new variable `org-agenda-search-headline-for-time' also turned off
time searching for diary items as an unwanted side-effect. This
commit makes sure that diary entries are always parsed for a time.

This is indeed a bug. The all to `org-get-tags-at' does change the
match data if there is a match for the inheritance regexp. This
problem is now avoided by first extracting (match-string 1), and then
getting the tags.
Studying this bug also exposed another one, namely that file tags are
not marked as inherited tags. This is now fixed, immediately when
the #+FILETAGS line is parsed.

This was caused by the fact that markers seem to point to the
base buffer always, so we need to check if the current buffer's
base buffer is equal to the marker buffer.

When setting the variable `org-remember-back-directory', each
remember buffer created will now get its own unique file name in that
directory. So if you, by accident, overwrite a remember buffer or
remove it before storing it, there will be a backup.
Items are listed in the agenda sometimes in bright colors, to draw
attention to important tasks or deadlines. When such an item is
switched to DONE, the state change is reflected by the new TODO
keyword, but the line itself might still be bright. Org de-emphasizes
the line by changing the face of the line. It used to change it to
the face `org-done', but now we use a new, independent face
`org-agenda-done'.
When a tags/property match does match an entry and its sublevels, the
sublevels used to be indented by dots, to indicate that the matches
likely result from tag inheritance. This is now no longer the
default, but you can get it back with
(setq org-tags-match-list-sublevels 'indented)

Fixed with this commit, a patch written by Peter Jones.
Outline levels below the headline boundary are now treated better, as
proper list. The variable `org-export-latex-low-levels' can now also
be `itemize' or `enumerate', to get the corresponding list structure.
The new default is `itemize', to make it parallel with the behavior in
HTML.
When exporting to a temporary buffer, images to replace LaTeX
fragments cannot be produced, because there is no useful location
where they can be put. Therefore, these images are not produced in
this case.
This commit implements an important change: When, during a
stuck-project search, a project tree is identified as not stuck, so
far the search would continue after the end of the project tree. From
now on, the search continues in the subtree, so that stuck subprojects
can still be identified.
In verse environments, line breaks are now enforced both in LaTeX and
in HTML. Centering is now implemented using a div rather than a
paragraph, so that there may be several paragraphs in the centering
environment. Blockquotes now also may have several paragraphs.

Why not, C-c C-x C-w is a fine idea for this. It should now work.
When a note is taken, the new drawer is created before the note is
taken. Now the drawer is removed again if the note gets aborted and
if the drawer is empty.

This is in fact how changing time works in many applications, and
it does make sense here as well. The commits implements this
change.
It also implements a way to change the start time of an entry from
the agenda. The date is normally changed with S-right/left.
Now, if you add a C-u prefix, the hour will be changed. If you
immediately press S-right/left again, hours will continue to be
changed.
A double prefix will do the same for minutes.
If a link is [[#name][desc]], the href wil be exacty href="#name".
So starting a link target with # will indicate that there will be an
explicit target for this.

Yes, this is a bug that occurs in the special case when the
heading stars are inserted in front of an existing line. The
commit adds code to make sure the correct position is used.
The default for the sitemap file was "index.org" which is really
terrible because it will overwrite the index.html file. Now the
default is "sitemap.org".

This commit is the patch Adam sent in.
Message-mode assigns auto-safe file names to temporary buffers, in the
draft directory. This causes problems when running message-mode in a
temporary buffer with with-temp-buffer. When the form tries to kill
the buffer, is asks for saving it....
This commit turns off the buffer-modified flag and so avoids the
query.
Patch by Nick Dokos.
Running a command that would use the tag scanner could suffer a large
slow-down when many entries match, because the tag list with
inheritance forces each matching entry to walk the hierarchy.
Now, it is possible to avoid this penalty by using the variable
`org-scanner-tags', or by binding the `org-trust-scanner-tags' to t
around calls to `org-get-tags-at' and `org-entry-properties' when
retrieving tags and properties for the current entry in the
scanner/mapper.
An agenda item carries a full list of tags. The list must normally be
made, but not during a tags scan. So now the tags scan does pass on
its list instead, which should make things faster.

This commit fixes the bug.
Custom commands can now bind `org-agenda-filter-preset'. This filter
will then be present in the agenda view and persist through refresh
and further filtering. Only a new agenda command will remove the
filter again.
uuidgen ids may start with a number and therefore are not valid names
in HTML. Therefore we now use and "ID-" prefix for such IDs when
exporting to HTML.
The variable org-priority-faces can now be used to set special faces
for different priority cookies.
Also, in the agenda, the default is now to fontify only the priority
cookie, not the entire task. See the variable
`org-agenda-fontify-priorities'.
Before, the bibliography will exist inside the outline structure, as
part of the last section. This commit adds code to find it, cut it
out, and move it to a better location.
Before this patch, org-agenda-quit would delete the agenda window if
the frame had more than one window. This patch changes that behavior
slightly so that if org-agenda-window-setup is 'current-window, the
agenda window won't be deleted.
Org erroneously filed top-level headings as level 2, because it
assumes that if should file below some heading. However, if there is
no heading to file under, this should be turned off.
Patch by igrekster.
When inserting new list entries, sometime empty lines will be
inserted automatically. This, however, makes only sense if empty
lines do not terminate the list, as configured by
`org-empty-line-terminates-plain-lists'.
This commit makes sure that, if
`org-empty-line-terminates-plain-lists' is set, automatic empty lines
will never be inserted.

This was caused by an attempt of the publishing code to always find
the top enclosing project. While this makes sense when publishing a
project, for a single file we want just the smallest enclosing
project. This commit makes sure that this difference is treated
correctly.
A new hook is introduced, `org-agenda-before-write-hook'.
A function that ca be added to this hook is
`org-agenda-add-entry-text'. When this is done, each of the entries
shown in the agenda is amended with text that in the original buffer
is part of the entry text below the headline. Drawers are not copied,
and also the line with scheduling and deadline information is not
used. Finally, the number of ines to be added is imited by
`org-agenda-add-entry-text-maxlines'.
Links with description not create a note before the next headline that
contains the link. In the text, the description will be shown.
The new variable `org-export-ascii-links-to-notes' can be configured
to turn off this behavior, then the reference will be inserted inline
in the text. If the line becomes too long because of this, it will
be wrapped.
If the headline contains a time-of-day in one format or another, it
will be used to sort the entry into the time sequence of items for a
day. Some people have time stamps in the headline that refer to the
creation time or so, and then this produces an unwanted side effect.
If this is the case for your, use the new option
`org-agenda-search-headline-for-time' to turn off searching the
headline for a time.
Undo will now remove up to 20 characters typed consecutively, just
like Emacs normally does. We need a special implementation for this
because Org has its own self-insert command.
The code for doing this is a patch by Martin Pohlack.
A line: #+MARCO: name replacement text
can be referenced by {{{name}}}. As special cases, {{{title}}} will
reference #+TITLE, and similar with similar lines.

This is a reasonable request, and this commit implements it.
To have separate values, set org-special-ctrl-a/e to a cons
cell with the setting for C-a in the car and the setting for
C-e in the cdr.

The reason for the empty line being inserted is subtle:
The function `org-add-planning-info' is used to add and remove planning
info time stamps (deadline, scheduled, closed) from the second line in
an entry. Usually, the function is called to add something, with an
optional argument to also remove something. In doing so, it assumes
that the second line must be there, and if it is not there, it creates
it.
Now, sometimes `org-add-planning-info' is called only to remove a time
stamp. In this particular case it was to remove the CLOSED time
stamp. This happens when the state is changed from a DONE or nil
state to a not-done state. The idea behind this is that maybe to
entry was marked earlier as DONE, but the user has changed his mind,
so the timestamp recording when it was finished should be removed.
So in this case, an empty line was created, assuming that there would
be something to add - only nothing was added.
This commit arranges for checking if there is something to add before
creating an empty line.
orgstruct++-mode is an enhanced version of orgstruct mode that
also imports all indentation and paragraph settings into the major
mode. Furthermore, it now allows to use M-RET and M-S-RET in items
after the first line. The latter change was a request by Austin
Frank.
The new command `org-reload' allows to reload all Org lisp files.
By default it will load compiled files if these are available. If
not, or when called with a C-u prefix argument, uncompiled code will
be loaded. This is good for producing a meaningful backtrace when an
error occurs.
Like TODO keywords before, now also tags each get their own CSS class,
given by the tag itself. Invalid characters in tags are all replaced
by "_" to make sure the resulting HTML remains valid.
Two new variables can be used to add a prefix to the class names for
TODO keywords and tags.

OK, I removed those two fields, and I switched things around so that
the new macros are defined earlier.
Since we now have org-use-fast-todo-selection set by default,
there is no reason for special treatment of the prefix argument
anymore.

Org has a number of places where the value read by completing-read may
contains spaces. For these occasions, the space character needs to be
a normal character.
The recent support for ido.el invalidated these special cases because
ido has its own way of dealing with spaces.
This commit now makes sure that ido is off for the critical cases
where completion must allow spaces.
This commit implements the possibility to import the in-buffer export
options as TeX macros, like \orgTITLE, \orgAUTHOR etc.

I agree with this view and the commit implements exactly this.
(org-indent-line-function): Make sure this works even if there is not
`org-drawer-regexp' defined. This can happen when orgstruct-mode is
used in a non-org buffer.
This commit makes it possible to force new lines and even empty lines
in the fast tag selection interface, either by splitting tags
definition into several lines, or by inserting "\n" into the tags
list, or by inserting (:newline) into the tags alist.
This is largely a patch from Christopher Suckling
The variables `org-agenda-todo-ignore-deadlines' and
`org-agenda-todo-ignore-with-date, and
`org-agenda-tags-todo-honor-ignore-options' are now all mentioned in
the docs.
The commands org-agenda-show can now be used to show varying degrees of
context when called with a prefix argument. `0 SPC', `1 SPC', ... `4
SPC'.
The new command `org-agenda-cycle-show' shows different amounts of
context when called several times in succession.
Christopher Suckling reports that todo state sorting doe not work in
block agenda. The reason for this that the variable
`org-todo-keywords-for-agenda' which is supposed to be a lost of all
keywords of all buffers contributing to the agenda, is not correct
during the construction of a block agenda.
Therefore, this commit instructs the todo state comparison function to
refer back to the original buffer for a list of todo keywords.
The :END: line is now indented like the line starting the drawer. And
the first line after the drawer is now indented like the :END: line.
The latter problem was pointed out by Christopher Suckling.
Clock lines are now by default captured into the drawer LOGBOOK. This
means that, if state notes are also captured into a drawer, they will
be mixed with notes.
Org-mode has many context-sensitive keys. A new hook system now
allows add-ons to add functionality to these keys for contexts that
are special for the add-on.
For example, if an add-on wants to use C-c C-c in a special context,
if must add a function to `org-ctrl-c-ctrl-c-hook' that will check for
the context and run its command when the context is present.
Selecting files for publishing was strictly based on extension.
Richard Klinda provided this patch to allow the symbol `any' as an
indicator to actually take all files in a directory.

notes will go into this drawer, or another one specified by that
variable.
When the variable org-log-states-order-reversed was nil, so that notes
would be appended to the list of notes, the indentation of the item
was wrong. This commit fixes the problem.

This makes sense. This commit adds, to each TODO keyword, an
additional class named after the keyword. For example:
<span class="todo WAITING">WAITING</span>
So each todo keyword gets class "todo" or "done" depending on which
general type it is. And in addition it gets itself as class.
So go to your CSS file and configure like this:

The state change logging is great, but I wonder whether we can
further improve it:
1. Can we also include the original state in the log message?

The message will be clearer, and useful even when somebody edited
the TODO keyword in place without using the "org-todo" command
(in that case, simply looking at all the "destination states" in
the log message does not give us the right information).
This strikes me like a good idea, so I have implemented it with this
commit.
Consider a file with 2 lines:

Place the cursor at line 2 (where you can type). Then use C-c C-x C-i
to start a clock.
You have now 3 lines:

However, the cursor is still placed at line 2, like before. I think
it would be more useful if it were moved to line 3 so that you can
start writing right away, just as before. This saves you the C-n
needed to move again to a blank line.
This commit implements exactly this request.
Daniel Clemente noticed that the clock drawer, when it is created for
the second clock entry, will swallow a plain list item after it,
because it thinks it might be a clock note.
This commit makes this function check for indentation. If the plain
list item is indented less than the last clock line, it will be
assumed that it does not belong to the clocking line, and the drawer
will not swallow the item.
Now any line like
#+XYZ_TODO:
will be assumed to define some kind of TODO chain. If the handlers in
`org-todo-setup-filter-hook' do not do anything with this sequence, it
will be treated as `sequence'.

Yes, intentional, because the same routine also does sorting of
entries and should prefer active time stamps. However, I realize that
we can still look for an inactive time stamp when no active one can be
found. This is what this commit implements.

when I complete a task that the next sibling task gets the
schedule from the previous one. This implements that kind of
workflow with the org-depend contrib package.
I've also added a few methods to org.el to make working with

When there were multiple cookies in a headline, the counting would be
double. Also the hook got called always, even if no cookie was
present.
Fixed now.
Turns out a number of people set their variables too late so that
activating dependencies does not work correctly. We now double-check
in the mode hook that everything is in order.....
This causes problems in tables.
You have now two ways to make verbatim things. Use ~xyz~ or =xyz=
depending on whether ~ or = might occur in the string......
When org-depend.el is loaded, running the blocker hook will already
toggle a tag. However, when dimming the agenda, we do not want that.

The id for the footnotes div is now called "text-footnotes", not
"footnotes-text", to be more consistent with other divs used in
Org-mode.

Using `C-c C-x C-b' in a headline now again toggles all checkboxes
below hat headline. This feature got lost during a recent overhaul of
this function.

This commit adds a key (`C-c C-x o') to toggle the ORDERED property of
a tree. And it adds menu entries for doing this, which also reflect
the current state of the tree.
When a line now contains several statistics cookies, all of them will
be updated.

Whatever week I put in :block, it puts one less in the title. It
seems actually gather the clock data from the right week, but the
title is wrong? Or I misunderstand something as usual :-).
There was a problem wit the week starting date.
A user setting of
(setq org-show-entry-below t)
could overrule a visibility property with value FOLDED. This commit
fixes this by turning off the above setting for the context of setting
startup visibility.
I have changed my mind and turned off shift-selection support again by
default, because it causes confusing behavior, sometimes calling an Org
command and sometimes doing shift selection. The default behavior is
now:
- in special contexts, execute Org commands
- outside special contexts, create an error that will point users to
configure the variable `org-support-shift-select'. Hopefully that
will make them read the docstring and then decide for themselves
what to do.
Emacs 23 introduces `shift-selection-mode', and even turns it on by
default. Therefore, it is fair to assume that users of Emacs 23 will
expect to be able to select a region by holding down shift will moving
the cursor. This conflicts with the use of shifted cursor keys in
Org-mode for other purposes, in particular to "change the item under
the cursor", like it is done for time stamps, item bullet types, TODO
keywords and priorities.
This commit tries to support `shift-selection-mode' as much as possible,
while retaining these valuable commands keys for Org-mode. The
following things are changed:
1. The range of contexts where Org's commands do act is reduced.
- S-up and S-down no longer jump to the previous and next plain list
item - you can use the paragraph commands C-up and C-down for this
quite well.
- S-left and S-right only change the bullet type of a plain list
item when the cursor is *exactly* on the bullet, not just anywhere
in the item line.
2. When a S-cursor key is used outside a special context, a region is
started or extended.
3. When a region has already been started, it will be continue to
extend even if the S-cursor keys move the cursor into a special
context.
4. If you want S-cursor selection to work in headlines as well, you
can set the variable `org-support-shift-select' to
`even-in-headlines'. Then you need to rely on `C-c C-t' to set
TODO keywords, and on `C-c ,' to set priorities.
If you want everything to behave the way it was, set
`org-support-shift-select' to nil.
There were two bugs:
1. Timestamp processing did not honor the setting of
`org-export-with-timestamps' in the text before the first
headline.
2. When `org-export-with-timestamps' was nil, time stamps were removed
even in tables. I think this is incorrect, so in tables, time
stamps are now never removed.
The variables =org-agenda-todo-ignore-with-date=,
=org-agenda-todo-ignore-with-date=, and
=org-agenda-todo-ignore-with-date= make it possible to
exclude TODO entries which have this kind of planning info
associated with them. This is most useful for people who
schedule everything, and who use the TODO list mainly to find
things that are not yet scheduled. Thomas Morgan pointed out
that also the tags-todo search may serve exactly this
purpose, and that it might be good to have a way to make
these variables also apply to the tags-todo search. I can
see than, but could not convince myself to make this the
default. A new variable must be set to make this happen:
=org-agenda-tags-todo-honor-ignore-options=.
Formulas can now refer to fields and regions in other tables, be it in
the same file or even in different files.
This also opens the door for more interesting R support, because
arbitrary tables in a file can now be accessed with appropriate
commands.
Finally, this commit also introduces a convenience for creating
references in tables. For the purpose of references, it will always
be *assumed* that there is another hline at the end if each table. So
for example in a table that has only a single hline, to separate
header from data, you can now access all of column two with
"@I$2..@II$2".

If a heading has tags, then that heading's time summary
overlay (shown by C-c C-x C-d) is displayed using the
org-tag face. This looks a bit strange. Is it intended? It
is especially noticeable in my case, since I have my tags
shown in a smaller font.
This is cause by the fact that we use the `secondary-selection' face
here which only highlights but inherits the rest from what is below.
The idea was that these clock times should have the same color as the
headline they belong to, but this idea is defeated when a line has tags
with a very different face.
This commit introduces a separate face for this purpose, so that users
can customize it.
The conversion commands `C-c -' and `C-c *' are now better
behaved and therefore more useful, I hope.
If there is an active region, these commands will act on the
region, otherwise on the current line.
- C-c - :: This command turns headings or normal lines into
items, or items into normal lines. When there is a
region, everything depends on the first line of the
region:
- if it is a item, turn all items in the region into
normal lines.
- if it is a headline, turn all headlines in the region
into items.
- if it is a normal line, turn all lines into items.
- special case: if there is no active region and the
current line is an item, cycle the bullet type of the
current list.
- C-c * :: This command turns items and normal lines into
headings, or headings into normal lines. When there is
a region, everything depends on the first line of the
region:
- if it is a item, turn all items in the region into
headlines.
- if it is a headline, turn all headlines in the region
into normal lines.
- if it is a normal line, turn all lines into headlines.
This allows you to use org-remember in any gnus buffer - even when
not on a location that will create a usable link. Instead of
failing with the error "Not on a group" just create a remember
note with no link instead.
This makes org-remember more user-friendly - we don't have to
change buffers to a non-gnus buffer to create a remember note.

do with the combination of American style quotation marks
and footnotes.
According to many American manuals of style, quotation marks
are to be placed after a sentence ending period if the
quoted passage is at the end of the sentence. E.g.

When I use American style quotation in conjuction with a
footnote, the exporter does not convert the closing quote
marks into a two single quotation marks (i.e., LaTeX smart
quotes).
Thus, the following source snippet:

Notice the double quotation mark (rather than two single
apostrophes) at the end of the first sentence. Notice also
the correct quotation mark format appears in the second
sentence, where the period comes after the quotation mark.
This commit addresses this issue by checking of text
protection is off not after the quotation mark, but before.
The directory used for attachments to an entry is by default chosen
automatically, with a name derived from the entry ID to make sure it
is unique.
However, in some cases it may be better to assign a user-chosen
directory to and entry, to be used for attachments. This commits
implements this change. See the documentation changes for information
on how things work.

The second change made bu this commit is that it is now possible to
inherit the attachment directory from a parent, so that an entire
project subtree can use a single directory.
Two new variables, `org-export-html-inline-image-extensions' and
`org-export-latex-inline-image-extensions' now define the file
extensions that will be considered for inlining images. The default
for HTML is png, jpg, jpeg, and gif files. The default for LaTeX is
png, jpg, jpeg, and pdf, assuming processing with `pdflatex'.
For LaTeX export, this can lead to conflicts for links that point
to non-image PDF files. To avoid that such a link will be inlined by
accident, always give a description text for such a link, one that is
not equal to the path.
The special first column in some tables was not removed for LaTeX
export. This bug was probably introduces recently, while trying to
fix problems with special characters in LaTeX tables.
Export is now working again properly.

From glancing through org-plot.el, it seems as though the problem is
that the text-ind parameter is false when all the values in the
"independent variable" column are legal numbers. However, my lisp
skills are not up to fixing this.
This patch is by Charles Sebold and Eric Schulte fixes the problem.
When a property for column view is supposed to contain a date, not
defining allowed values could lead to an obscure error message. This
is now improved.

Sometimes archiving a task displays the next task heading after ... at the
end of a folded task. This keeps the next task the cursor is on starting
in column 1 which feels more natural.

In fact, the number of duplicate lines exactly matches the number of

function perhaps searching the archive file once for each of the
agenda files and then displaying the results as separate lines?
Indeed, when putting together the list o archive files to search,
Org did not check for duplicates. This commit implements
uniquification of the list.
The end of the last line of a colon example is not protected, and this
caused the time stamp removal protection to fail if a time stamp was
the last thing in such an example.
Lines preceded by a colon are treated as fixed-width examples.
This commit improves the moment when the protection of these lines
happens during preprocessing. And it enforces that a space must
follow the colon for the line to be treated in this way.

regular expression that was defined only locally in Org files, but
not in the buffer used by the LaTeX exporter.
2. Underscores in links can get special treatment by the LaTeX
exporter. Now the link is protected from this.

specify the switches for code references and line numbering that work
also when directly adding SRC or EXAMPLE blocks.

The variable `org-blank-before-new-entry' regulates if Org should
insert a blank line before a new entry, when making a new headline or
plain list item. Up to now, the possible values in each case where t
or nil, i.e. unconditionally do or don't insert a blank line.
Now each setting can also be `auto'. If this is the case, Org will
look if the current entry, of which the command creates a sibling,
does have a blank line before it. If yes, it will also make a blank
line. If not, it will not. This seems so useful that I have made
this behavior the default.

This task does not show up on my agenda anymore (probably because
the year changed). If I change the deadline entry to this:

then it shows up as 37 days late. I'm bringing this up as soon as
I noticed it just so people are aware of this. I have a few of
these tasks that just dropped off my agenda (probably at the
beginning of the year).
This interesting bug seems only to happen when the repeat is yearly,
and after crossing the December 31st year boundary. It was a sorting
issue - Org-mode (in the function `org-closest-date') computes two
dates that are consistent with the repeater, one before and one after
the target date. When the computation is done with a preference for
the past date (as it happens for deadlines), it should use the earlier
date. In fact, it did choose "n1", assuming that it was the earlier
one. This assumption does hold for daily, weekly and monthly
repeaters, but not for yearly ones.
This commits make sure that "n1" always holds the earlier date, so
that the logic at the end of the function works again.
This commit removes some of the stuff that was specific for the LaTeX
exporter, and falls back to the default configuration that works for
all backends.
Here is what the commit does:
- The variable `org-export-latex-remove-from-headlines' is now
obsolete. Instead, also LaTeX export now responds to the settings
in the variables org-export-with-todo-keywords',
`org-export-with-priority', and `org-export-with-tags' and in the
corresponding OPTION settings.
- Removal of time stamps and related keywords now already happens in
the preprocessor, so that it will be perfectly the same for all
backends.
- The list functions have been extended to accept an additional
parameter list, to overrule the default setting for a particular
list function. This is used to make the checkbox appearance in
LaTeX configurable, through the new variable
`org-export-latex-list-parameters'.
Column view could fail when the agenda contains entries from the Diary
which start with a *. This commit fixes this problems by making
`org-entry-properties' check for an org-mode buffer.
An agenda series can have a set of global options. Matt Lundin
reported that these options to not work completely. There reason was
that, when calling `org-finalize-agenda' for a series, the dynamic
binding of those options was already off again. This commit makes
sure that these bindings are available also during this final step.
When using "C-u C-u M-x org-remember RET" in order to jump to the last
storage location, the code failed to show the matching entry. This
commit makes sure that at least the headline of the last remember note
is made visible.
With the "* Footnotes" heading as last line in the buffer, footnote
insertion did not position new definitions correctly. This commit
fixes the problem.

This commit adds an option to org-w3m, to decide whether the mark
should be deactivated after copying the region.
New version from author Andy Steward.
Sorting footnotes used to be almost like normalization, in that all
footnotes would be collected into a single location. Now sorting
respects the setting of `org-footnote-section'. If that is nil,
sorting will actually move each footnote into the outline node of its
first reference.
This commit add a new face for footnote labels, and activates footnote
labels for mouse clicks and for `C-c C-o', to jump to the
corresponding reference or definition.
This patch implements fully automatic creation of unique labels for
footnotes, which is also turned on as the default setting. The
automatic labels look like [fn:1], [fn:2], etc, using the first
available unused number.
The commit introduces a new variable, `org-footnote-auto-label' with a
number of different options ranging from no auto creation (prompting
the user for a label) to fully automatic creation.
Also, the commit introduces new #+STARTUP options that can be used to
select these settings on a per-file basis.
There was a bug with documents with more than one anonymous footnotes,
which would all end up to reference the first one only. The patch
fixes this problem.
Setting org-footnote-section to nil now causes definitions to be
inserted at the end of the current outline node, instead of into a
special node names "Footnotes".
A new perl program, list-hooks.pl, now extracts the full list of hook
and function variables in Org, for inclusion into Worg's org-hooks.org.
Also, add a docstring to a few hooks that did not have one.
This patch introduces more hooks for preprocessing the export buffer,
at various strategic moments. See the Changes.org file for a
description of the hooks.
Org-mode allows multiple references to the same footnote. However,
the HTML exporter cannot use the same name for all these references,
because names have to be unique. This patch appends numbers to
footnote reference names, to make sure they remain unique.
The dark side of this patch means that from the footnote definition,
there is only a single link, to the first reference of the note.
However, in a browser you can always press BACK to go back after
jumping to a footnote definition.
This patch adds support functionality for the new code references. It
makes sure that `C-c C-o' will follow a code reference correctly. It
also extends the command org-store-link to actually create a new code
reference cookie when used in a source code temporary buffer created
with "C-c '". The new link will be stored, so that it can be inserted
with `C-c C-l'. When inserting such a link, no description will be
prompted for, because these coderef links should best not have a
description part.
This patch covers the three main backends, html, latex, and ascii. It
adds the code to make sure the coderef links identified by the
preprocessing will be implemented correctly when a backend does its work.
This patch covers the much of the new line numbering and code line
referencing.
We introduce a new function with the longish name
`org-export-replace-src-segments-and-examples'. It is an extension of
the earlier `org-export-replace-src-segments'. It now also covers
EXAMPLE blocks, not only source code blocks. This was necessary to
allow line numbering also in EXAMPLE blocks.
Both clock types now accept a string with options which will be given
in the BEGIN line. Options currently recognized are -n, +n, and -r.
A bit unsatisfactory about this patch may be that LaTeX-specific code
is now defined in org-exp.el, maybe eventually we want to think of a
way to move this code back to org-export-latex.el. Really, all it
does is adding line numbers and wrapping them into a verbatim
environment.
Besides adding line numbers in a backend specific way, this patch also
adds code to search or special cookies in source code, like "((1))" or
"((name))". These are labels that can be addressed by links as
references to specific line in source code.
This patch adds a new constant with javascript functions. Each
exported HTML file will contain these definitions. Also, we add to
the default export CSS style a new class, code-highlighted, which will
be used to highlight lines in code whenever the mouse overs over a
link to this line.
The remember handler was creating a buffer with `find-file-noselect',
and then trying to find it back using `get-file-buffer'. Apparently
there are situations where this can fail, to we now use directly the
buffer returned by `find-file-noselect'.
In a recent patch we have introduced names for all fields in the last
row. This has lead to a bug, that Org thinks there might be a field
formula associated with those fields. Now we check if there really is
one, and only in this case ask to overwrite it with a column formula.

The dynamic block capturing column view has an :id parameter that does
select from where the column view should be captured. The routine
searching for this entry so far only searched the current file, now it
uses the full ID API to find the entry also in another file.
Furthermore, a value "file:path/to/file.org" will capture the global
column view of that file.

1. When LaTeX export was done with a time-stamped file, a format
error in the timestamp format caused the output file to not
have the % comment in front of the time string. As this line
is early in the file, a LaTeX error would result.
2. Replacement of some special characters could fail. Strangely
this shows up only in XEmacs, but it still is a bug.
Both bugs were reported by Hugh Daschbach.
When refiling to the current file, the completion commands do not show
the file name. This was broken because I had switched from comparing
truenames to normal names. Now I am using expanded names, this is fast
and works well.
After the failed implementation of `@0' as a reference for the last
line, this is a second attempt to provide such references. I would
have liked to allow `@last' as the reference, that would have been
beautiful. However, too many regular expressions directly search for
`@' followed by a number, so this is too hard to implement.
Therefore, I am now turning the last row into a row of implicitly
named fields. From now on, $LR1, $LR2,... can be used to refer to
fields in the last row. These names may also appear on the left hand
side of formulas.
A prefix argument to the `org-agenda-show' command is now interpreted
to make sure the entire entry is made visible in the other window, not
only the headline.
Updating agenda lines did display tags incorrectly, because it used
the list of tags available as a property to remake the list. However,
that list contains down-cased versions of the tags, because all the
filtering in the agenda does ignore case in tags.
This patch implements a fresh scan for the tags each time a line is
updated, and in this way fixes the problem. It also reverses a
previous attempt to fix a similar problem.
Text inside tables did not receive the full treatment of handling sub-
and superscripts, and of special character quoting like %, &, and {}.
This patch does fix this, but I am worried that I am overlooking the
true reason why Bastien did switch off these conversions. We'll see
if and what this will break.
Exporting tables to LaTeX suffered from the problem that Org tables
are often long, but that the tabular environment in LaTeX cannot
handle long tables. This patch fixes this issue.
LaTeX export can now deal with very long tables, by setting an option
in the "ATTR_LaTeX:" line. Also, you can specify the alignment by
hand. Here is an example:
Also, table export now correctly deals with tables that start with a
hline. In such a case, also the LaTeX version will have this extra
hline before the first line.
This patch introduces three improvements to refile target construction,
which should speed these functions up significantly.
1. A faster way to move up a level in the outline hierarchy
2. A better way to construct the outline path, in the case
that the command is scanning the entire hierarchy anyway
3. Avoid comparing the true-names of files.
The last data line in a table is often a line with important data, for
example sums of a column. In tables with varying length, the row
number of this line is constantly changing, which makes it hard to
write programs creating tables and then installing formulas.
This patch introduces @0 as a special reference to the last row, so
that @0$3 would be the field in the last row, 3rd column.
Unique identifiers for entries can now be used more efficiently.
Internally, a hash array has replaced the alist used so far to
keep track of the files in which an ID is defined. This makes it
quite fast to find an entry by ID.
There is now a new link type which looks like this:
id:GLOBALLY-UNIQUE-IDENTIFIER
This link points to a specific entry. When you move the entry to
a different file, for example if you move it to an archive
file, this link will continue to work.
The file /org-id.el/ contains an API that can be used to write
code using these identifiers, including creating IDs and finding
them wherever they are.
Org has its own method to create unique identifiers, but if the
system has /uuidgen/ command installed (Mac's and Linux systems
generally do), it will be used by default. You an also select
the method by hand, using the variable =org-id-method=.
If the ID system ever gets confused about where a certain ID is,
it initiates a global scan of all agenda files with associated
archives, all files previously known containing any IDs, and all
currently visited Org-mode files to rebuild the hash. You can
also initiate this by hand: =M-x org-id-update-id-locations=.
Running this command will also dump into the =*Messages*= buffer
information about any duplicate IDs. These should not exist, but
if you /copy/ an entry with its properties, duplicate IDs will
inevitably be produced. This is unavoidable in a plain text
system that allows you to edit the text in arbitrary ways, and a
portion of care on your side is needed to keep this system clean.
The hash is stored in the file =~/.emacs.d/.org-id-locations=.
This is also a change from previous versions where the file was
=~/.org=id-locations=. Therefore, you can remove this old file
if you have it. I am not sure what will happen if the =.emacs.d=
directory does not exists in your setup, but in modern Emacsen, I
believe it should exist. If you do not want to use IDs across
files, you can avoid the overhead with tracking IDs by
customizing the variable =org-id-track-globally=. IDs can then
still be used for links inside a single file.
IDs will also be used when you create a new link to an Org-mode
buffer. If you use =org-store-link= (normally at =C-c l=) inside
en entry in an Org-mode buffer, and ID property will be created
if it does not exist, and the stored link will be an =id:= link.
If you prefer the much less secure linking to headline text, you
can configure the variable =org-link-to-org-use-id=. The default
setting for this variable is =create-if-interactive=, meaning
that an ID will be created when you store a link interactively,
but not if you happen to be in an Org-mode file while you create
a remember note (which usually has a link to the place where you
were when starting remember).
Tables, and Hyperlinks that represent inlined images, can now be
equipped with additional information that will be used during
export. The information will be taken from the following special
lines in the buffer and apply to the first following table or
link.
- #+CAPTION: :: The caption of the image or table. This string
should be processed according to the export backend, but
this is not yet done.
- #+LABEL: :: A label to identify the figure/table for cross
references. For HTML export, this string will become the
ID for the `<div class="figure">' element that encapsulates
the image tag and the caption. For LaTeX export, this
string will be used as the argument of a `\label{...}'
macro. These lables will be available for internal links
like `[[label][Table] ]'.
- #+ATTR_HTML: :: Attributes for HTML export of image, to be
added as attributes into the `<img...>' tag. This string
will not be processed, so it should have immediately the
right format.
- #+ATTR_LaTeX: :: Attributes for LaTeX export of images, to
be inserted into the optional argument of the
`\includegraphics[...]{file}' command, to specify scaling,
clipping and other options. This string will not be
processed, so it should have immediately the right
format, like `width=5cm,angle=90'
For LaTeX export, if either a caption or a label is given, the
element will be exported as a float, i.e. wrapped into a figure
or table environment.

This patch fixes these issues.
Tassilo Horn asked for this, because he finds the default behavior of
silently choosing a different row too confusing. I actually do agree.
The main use of this feature was running averages, if you need this
feature, you can customize the variable
`org-table-error-on-row-ref-crossing-hline'.
Moving trees up or down with XEmacs caused a problem when the tree is
at the beginning if the buffer or narrowed region. This patch
protects the relevant calls to outline-flag-region so that they are
only executed if the range is valid.
Samuel Wales writes:

This patch add a new customization variable `org-tag-faces' that can
be used to specify such faces. The rest of the patch implements these
new faces in Org-mode buffers as well as in the agenda.
It seems that CSS and Java-script stuff should be quoted in a very
strange way in order to make sure that the resulting file functions
correct in current browsers *and* validates against various XHTML and
XML standards. To be honest, the quoting technique seem really
strange, but Sebastian Rose argues, that this is the way to handle
this issue.
Gnus uses w3m to wash HTML messages and installs w3m-minor-mode-map in
these buffers. Therefore, this patch makes sure that the special copy
command that converts HTML links to Org-mode links also gets installed
into the minor mode map.
This is as yet untested.
Calling `org-archive-to-archive-sibling' caused problems when used
several times in a row. The new killed subtree would be appended to
the current head of the kill-ring, instead of being pushed there. The
reason for this is that the command `kill-region', which is called by
`org-cut-subtree' changes the variable `this-command', so that during
the next archive command, `kill-region' will think that the previous
command was also a kill and do the append.
Normally this is wanted, to make sure that several kill commands
create one big yank string. But in this case it has to be avoided.
The patch fixes the problem by let-binding (and therefore protecting)
the value of `this-command' around the call to `org-cut-subtree'.

Harri Kiiskinen suggested that it might be useful to make the LOCATION
property an inherited property during iCalendar export. In this way
you can have set the LOCATION for a whole set of items by setting it
only in the parent.
While this will slow down iCalendar export for large files, I think it
can be quite useful. This patch does implement the basic code needed
for this functionality. However, you still need to tell Org that
LOCATION should be inherited, by setting org-use-property-inheritance.
If you set it to t, beware that this may trigger a significant
slowdown when creating the match view in the agenda. So it may be
better to set this variable to
(setq org-use-property-inheritance '("LOCATION"))
instead.
This patch improves the internal handling of the large number of
export options that Org-mode has. In particular, it now defines a
single constant, `org-export-plist-vars' that contains the full list
of options, and how these can be accessed through variables, and
through the #+OPTIONS line. Before the patch, there used to be a
separate list or the OPTIONS handling, which has gotten out of sync.
This now no longer can happen.
Also, this patch adds two new variables, `org-export-with-priority',
and `org-export-with-todo-keywords', which can be used to turn the
export of TODO keywords and priority cookies on and off, so that these
can simply disappear and not be shown in the exported file. In fact,
the default for the priority cookie is to remove it.
There were bugs in the mapping API, pointed to by Samuel Wales:

WAITING, in all agenda files.

Org says invalid function for the string.
First of all, the example in the manual was wrong, the "nil" should be
gone. Second, the mapping function did not return all results in a
list, so that `length' could not count them.
This patch fixes these issues.
In addition to "<now>", "<today>", "<yesterday>", and
"<tomorrow>", there are more special values accepted now in
time comparisons in property searches: You may use strings
like =<+3d>= or =<-2w>=, with units d, w, m, and y for day,
week, month, and year, respectively

So far, the only way to select tags for inheritance was to
allow it for all tags, or to do a positive selection using
one of the more complex settings for
`org-use-tag-inheritance'. It may actually be better to
allow inheritance for all but a few tags, which was difficult
to achieve with this methodology.
This patch introduces a new option,
`org-tags-exclude-from-inheritance' which allows to specify an
exclusion list for inherited tags.
This patch does a lot of things. First, it makes sure that the tags
transferred to the agenda as text properties on each line are do carry
information about there origin (in the form of an `inherited' text
property). Then it modifies the function creating agenda lines so
that inherited tags will be listed and identified as such in the
agenda.
This new feature can be turned off with a new variable,
`org-agenda-show-inherited-tags'.
This file implements a special function to copy text from a w3m buffer
in a way that when the text is yanked back into an Org-mode buffer,
the links will be translated to Org syntax.
This key needs special treatment, because it needs to work *outside*
tables. The patch introduces a special command to call the
creation/conversion function if there is no conflicting binding to
`C-c |' outside of orgtbl-mode.
S-SPC did lead to an error in orgtbl-mode, because there is no binding
to this key. Now orgtbl-self-insert-command falls back on calling
self-insert-command for such cases.
This cleans up the implementation of the timer. Most important change
is that, after starting a time list with `C-c C-x -', you can then
simply use M-RET to add new items, which is addictive!
This patch implements a relative time for taking timed notes, useful
for example while watching a video, or during a meeting which is also
recorded. Here are the new commands:
- `C-c C-x .' ::
Insert a relative time into the buffer. The first time
you use this, the timer will be started. When called
with a prefix argument, the timer is reset to 0.
- `C-c C-x -' ::
Insert a description list item with the current relative
time. With a prefix argument, first reset the timer to 0.
- `C-c C-x 0' ::
Reset the timer without inserting anything into the buffer.
By default, the timer is reset to 0. When called with a
`C-u' prefix, reset the timer to specific starting
offset. The user is prompted for the offset, with a
default taken from a timer string at point, if any, So this
can be used to restart taking notes after a break in the
process. When called with a double prefix argument
`C-c C-u', change all timer strings in the active
region by a certain amount. This can be used to fix timer
strings if the timer was not started at exactly the right
moment.
When starting the publishing process with
`org-publish-current-project' from a file that is located in a project
that is also a component of a parent project, this patch now makes
sure that the entire parent project is published instead.
The creation of an automatic site map in org-publish with the
:auto-index and :index-filename parameter does exclude the index
file name from being added to the index. There was a bug which would
exclude this file name also in all subdirectories in a project. This
patch switches the comparison from looking at file names only to
looking at the complete path.
RET did fail in orgtbl-mode, if the cursor was at the beginning of the
buffer. Now it opens a new line whenever the cursor is at the
beginning of a line, and that includes the beginning of the buffer.....
Org-mode still has a few operations that do not work well when the
first line of a buffer is a headline. One was constructing the clock
table, but this one is eliminated by this patch.
When the export skips the text before the first headline, we now
include the comment line before the first headline, if any.
This makes sure that we can specify an anchor for this headline.
"\\" at the end of a line marks forces line breaks for HTML and LaTeX
export. ASCII export does preserve lines anyway, but these line break
indicators might still be present and need to be removed.

This patch introduces a new variable,
`org-list-two-spaces-after-bullet-regexp'. It can be a regular
expression matching plain list bullets. When it matches, changing the
bullet type will introduce two spaces instead of one after each
bullet.
For example,
(setq org-list-two-spaces-after-bullet-regexp "[.)]")
will make two spaces after "1." and "1)".
This patch compacts the persistence code. It also make sure that no
variables outside Org's name space are created. Finally, it makes
sure that the resumed clock is not hidden after a restart of Emacs.
Saving the clock history and the running clock could lead to pointers
to non-existing buffer, or to dired buffers of directories. This
patch implements more consistency checks.
It also allows a new value for `org-clock-persist'. When this is
`clock', only the running clock, but not the entire clock history
is saved.
Commands that modify the bullet style of a plain list, or that
renumber such a list may lead to changes in the width of a bullet.
The indentation of the lines below such a bullet is now automatically
adapted.
Also fixes a bug in bullet style cycling.
This removes the ambiguous description that might lead org users
to try to set this variable without a '::' separator. Without
the :: separator C-c C-x C-S fails with
Invalid 'org-archive-location'

There is little drawback:
- Gnus stored some headers in an array and makes them instantly
available. Unfortunately that doesn't apply to X-No-Archive, so I
have to select and widen the article buffer and parse anew.
This patch defines a new minor mode, `org-remember-mode', which is
turned on when Org-mode is used to handle a remember buffer. This
provides a safe way to modify keybindings (in
`org-remember-mode-map'), without overwriting keys in `org-mode-map'.
Since Org put remember buffers into Org-mode, remember-mode-map will
be entirely ignored.
do completion does not work well with values including white space,
which means we cannot use it in completion of values in remember
templates. This patch turns it off for this application.

When ID's are created, Org tries to remember in which file the id is
located. However, if an ID is created in a remember buffer, no file
is known. This patch makes sure that this condition does not lead to
an error.
When an org-remember template inserts a property, the template-creating
function tries to support the user by retrieving a list of allowed
values to facilitate completion. So far this was done by getting the
property with inheritance, ignoring that the cursor in the target file
buffer may not be in an entry at all. So now we just look at the global
and file lists of allowed values.

Naturally, this isn't what I want. Looking at
`org-insert-link', it seems that the problem may be that its
same-file link detection is matching 'file:' at
beginning-of-word, which it is in this case. In the general
case for which 'file:' detection is being used, is there a
reason to match against `\<' rather than `^' or
`^[[:space:]]*'? Changing to one of the latter two
expressions would, I believe, keep it From rewriting these
links I am trying to create.
Michael is right, and I have made this change.
The face `org-agenda-column-dateline' can be used to make datelines
with summaries look different from other column view lines.

A link to an image can function as the description part of a link, to
create a clickable image. The corresponding image tag was
erroneously processed like normal text. This patch protects such
descriptions from processing.

If you set the variable `org-completion-use-ido' to t, and if you have
ido-mode turned on, most instanced of completion in Org-mode will use
ido-complete.

There was a bug in the implementation of the "<today>" tag for time
comparison during property matching, and new tags "<yesterday>" and
"<tomorrow>" have been introduced.

Org allows to define invisible anchors in a document in comment lines
like
If such a line is directly before or after a headline, previously this
anchor was removed, and all references to it were replaced with
references to the anchor that the headline had anyway.
Matthew Lundin pointed out that this makes it impossible to have
permanent links to headlines that can also be used from outside the
current page.
This patch changes his situation by adding the additional targets as
empty anchors to the section heading. If works by creating, during
preprocessing, an alist with targets that do have aliases. During
publishing, these aliases are looked up and converted into anchors.
In LaTeX export, these additional targets become additional labels.
The was a faulty regular expression in this function which never
matched, causing creation of a new picture area to mess up and start
the new area at the end of the previous line instead of the beginning
of the current.

This is a bugfix. When the number of headline levels was set to zero,
or if there was no heading at all in the export, the final closing
</div> should not be present.
This sets the bookmark org-remember-last-stored to the location
of the stored remember note when it is filed using C-1 C-c C-c
(the org-refile interface)
Both org-refile-last-stored and org-remember-last-stored bookmarks
will point at the same place after saving the remember buffer.
This makes jumping to the last stored remember note more consistent
This patch implements the possibility to translate links.
It can be useful if use both planner and Org-mode, if you sometimes
copy text from one side to the other and you do not want to worry
about link syntax. This patch allows links created with planner to
function correctly in Org-mode. I would probably be simple to
implement the reverse conversion in planner as well.
This patch is a first shot at this functionality and very likely can
be improved.
Org's `org-yank' now identifies itself as being `yank' by setting
`this-command', and by making sure that the mark is set correctly. In
this way, `yank-pop' will work correctly after using `C-y' in an
Org-mode buffer. Org-mode does not have its own implementation, to
`yank-pop' will insert content plainly, without adjusting tree levels,
and without folding.
Samuel Wales pointed out that `yank-pop' doe not work anymore.
iCalendar export has now improved compliance with RFC 2445.
Now all occurrences in data fields of the double quotes are replaced
by two single quotes, and any fields containing comma, colon, or
semicolon are quoted by surrounding them with double quotes.
Org sometimes hits a "Before first heading" error. This error happens
when `outline-back-to-heading' is called before the first heading in a
buffer. In normal use, this is something easy to fix, because of
course you know where you are and you can identify the problem.
However, when Org scans many different buffers, for example to collect
agenda entries, you may not be able to tell easily where this error
happened. This patch introduces a wrapper around
`outline-back-to-heading', with improving the error message by
spelling out buffer and location.
Georg C.F. Greve asked for configurable leaders strings for agenda
display of time ranges. This patch implements these strings, in the
new option `org-agenda-timerange-leaders'.
When an ASCII image is edited with C-c ', it will in the end be quoted
by prepending colons to each line. If tabulators are used in the
image, this may mess up the alignment. Since tabulators are not a
good idea in ASCII images anyway, this patch makes sure that any
tabulators are replaced by spaces.
Org-mode's `org-yank' command is used as a replacement for the normal
`yank' command. It differs by giving special treatment to subtrees or
sets of subtrees when yanking them, by adjusting the level to fit the
outline, and by folding the trees after the yank.
This patch does fine-tune this behavior.
First of all, if any prefix argument is given to the command, it
immediately hands over the action to the standard `yank' command. In
particular, you can use `C-u C-y' to yank as-is, with the only minor
side effect that the cursor will end up at the beginning of the yanked
text.
Secondly, the folding of the yanked trees will only happen if there is
no text directly after the insertion point that would be swallowed by
the folding process. This was confusing in the past and is much
better now, with a message announcing that folding has been
suppressed.
Bernt Hanses writes:
This changes the default value for Effort during agenda filtering so
that an undefined Effort value is treated as 0 instead of nil. Tasks
with no effort defined now return zero effort when selecting tasks for
the filter.
There was effectively no way to select 'tasks with no effort defined'
using the agenda effort filter. The '<' operator is interpreted as
'<=' and the default effort selection defined in
org-agenda-filter-by-tag starts with zero ("0 0:10 ...") so this
change just treats tasks with no effort defined the same as tasks with
an effort of 0.
This allows fast selection of NEXT tasks with no effort defined.
Column view with follow-mode active in the agenda is great for quickly
filling in the agenda estimated effort values for tasks. Just display
your Next tasks, then / 0 to select tasks with no effort and enter
column mode (C-c C-x C-c) and fill in your effort values with the
quick keys (0-9) for all of the tasks that have blanks in the effort
column.
The refile command allows to move a subtree to under some other
heading, in the current file or even in a different file.
Sometimes one has a number of sibling subtrees that should all be
refiled to the same location. This patch implements a simplification
for this process. You can mark the region of subtrees (using
transient-mark-mode in required for this) and then move them all with
a single command.
Org-mode produces summaries of clocked items in the form of Org-mode
tables. This patch implements the possibility to define formulas that
should be applied to the clock tables, in order to do additional
analysis.
Formulas for clock tables are supported in two ways.
First, a formula can simply be added by hand to a table. Part of this
patch makes sure that, when the previous version of the table contains
a #+TBLFM: line, it will be copied to the new version.
Secondly, the clocktable definition allows a new parameter
`:formula'. The string value of this parameter will be installed as
the formula line for the table. If a formula parameter is given, it
will overrule any previous formula line.
As a special case, using the symbol `%' as the formula will install a
formula that will compute the fraction of total time that was spent in
a subtree.
In both cases, the formulas will be immediately evaluated after the
table has been created.
Bernt Hansen recently reported that occasionally he got a newline
included with property values returned by `org-entry-get'. While the
reason for this is not understood (maybe some dark mingling with
character syntax), these new regexps are explicit about what they
interpret as a non-white character and therefore should make this
matching safer.
Jurgen Defume asked for a way to display only logging information in
the agenda. This patch implements such a possibility. It works by
calling `org-agenda-log-mode' (bound to `l' in the agenda) with a
double prefix arg. This sets the variable `org-agenda-show-log' to a
special value `only' which is then interpreted by the agenda-creating
functions.
These are changes that where made in the Emacs CVS.
The change in org-publish is not final, it is still being
discussed - however, the current change should make it possible
to compile and run the code with the latest CVS version of Emacs.
When org-yank inserts a subtree, it moves the cursor to the headline
after the yank. A structural bug in the `org-yank' function did cause
this motion also to happen after a normal yank. Fixed now.
Matthew Lovell found that VM messages are only displayed reliably upon
following a link, when the function `vm-preview-current-message' is
called instead of `vm-beginning-of-message'. This patch implements
this change.
Links in the standard form [[link][description]] are allowed to have
brackets in them when these are escapes %5B and %5D. Creating links
through the Org link interface automatically does this conversion.
However, as noticed by Paul R, there is a bug when actually following
such links, when the link will be cut off at the first closing bracket
in the link.
This patch fixes this problem by adjusting the appropriate regexp.
This patch introduces two new functions in org-attach.el,
`org-attach-expand', and `org-attach-expand-link'. Both take a file
name as an argument, assume that this file is an attachment of the
current entry, and return the full path to this file or a
"file:..." link to it, respectively.
With these functions, it becomes very easy to use link abbreviations
to create a new link type to attachments:

Org records (depending on setup) various information about progress
achieved with projects and tasks. It can record when an item is done
(when it is "closed"), it can record time spent working on these
entries (clocking), and it can record state changes.
In the daily/weekly agenda, turning on logbook mode with the `l' key
will lists the tasks closed or clocked on a day.
This patch implements showing recorded state changes in the agenda
logbook. By default, showing state changes is not turned on. But you
can configure the new variable `org-agenda-log-mode-items' to trigger
inclusion of state changes. An alternative way is to press `C-u l' in
the agenda, to temporarily force inclusion of all possible entries
(closed, clock, state) into the agenda display.
In passing, this patch renames the function `org-agenda-get-closed' to
the now more appropriate `org-agenda-get-progress'. The old name
continues to be available as an alias, but its use is deprecated.
Org-mode uses a special setup with a number of different customization
variables to specify how a file should be opened when following a
:file:..." link with `C-c C-o'. By using a `C-u' prefix, it was
possible to overrule the customized setup and to force opening the
file in Emacs.
Samuel Wales requested to amend this process, so that a double prefix
argument would do the opposite: force opening the application *outside*
of Emacs, using a system default application. This is what this patch
implements.
Internally this works through a new entry in system specific constants
`org-file-apps-defaults-gnu', org-file-apps-defaults-macosx', and
`org-file-apps-defaults-windowsnt'. The new entry has the car
`system' and specifies the command that should be used for the double
C-u calls. As before, the user option `org-file-apps' can overrule
these default settings.
Note that all this only applies to following "file:" links, and does
not make a difference for, for example, "http:" links.
This is a bug fix. When the option `org-link-file-path-type' has the
value `adaptive', absolute file names would not be abbreviated if they
are relative to the users home directory. For any other values of
this variable except `noabbrev', absolute links are in fact
abbreviated, so the previous behavior is an inconsistency,
as noticed by Matt Lundin.
This patch fixes this problem and makes sure that also in this case,
file names are abbreviated.
Finally, the patch also fixes a structural bug that would ignore
the double C-u prefix if it was given.
When the cursor is at the end of the buffer but not at the beginning
of a line, inserting a new headline with C-RET did insert the stars
into the last line, without adding the needed newline. The new line
is now added.
Link descriptions where so far exported literally. However, really
they need to escape special characters and have TeX-like macros
interpreted and emphasis enabled just like any other text.
This patch makes sure link descriptions are passed through a new
filter, `org-export-html-format-desc' which does just that.
This fix is a follow-up to a report by Sebastian Rose.
So far, Org used either `fit-window-to-buffer' or
`shrink-window-if-larger-than-buffer' without any further checks when
displaying one of its many help and selection buffers. This can cause
problems if the user has set up Emacs to split windows horizontally
rather than vertically, because the window being shrunken then may be
side-by-side with another window, and shrinking the height of one will
also change the other.
With this patch, shrinking a window always goes through the new
function `org-fit-window-to-buffer' which only acts if the current
window spans the whole width of the frame.
Furthermore, this function also helps with compatibility, because it
falls back to `shrink-window-if-larger-than-buffer' if
`fit-window-to-buffer' does not exist, as is the case on older version
of Emacs and XEmacs.
field (or in any other attribute value) must be written as "&" in
order to be valid XHMTL. This patch implements a new filter function
through which every href value is passed, and which enforces this
standard.
This is was triggered by a report by Sebastian Rose.
When marking a repeated entry DONE in the daily or weekly agenda, that
task would previously still be shown as TODO, because the repeater
immediately restores the TODO state after moving the time stamp. This
is bad feedback.
This problem was hard to fix. Because the same line may be present in
other lines in the same weekly agenda, we cannot simply update all
lines related to this entry.
What we do now is this: Before the repeater does its work in shifting
the time stamp and resetting the TODO keyword, we take a snapshot of
the headline as it looks then. And then, when we update the agenda
view, we change only the line at the cursor instead of all lines
related to this entry. We also make sure that this is only so if the
cursor is in a daily/weekly agenda, on TODAY's date.
There still remain possible inconsistencies. For example, if you have
a daily repeating task in the weekly agenda, and you move the cursor a
few days into the future and mark it DONE there, the entry will
actually be marked DONE for today, but still show up in today's task
list as TODO. refreshing the agenda will fix the display in such an
unlikely case.

The index generation of org-publish does briefly visit all files in
order to extract the correct page title. Visiting is necessary,
because the title may be set by the first line in the buffer, by a
Before this patch, this would cause the generation of a large number
of buffers, one for each file mentioned in the index. This patch
arranges for these buffers to be removed again. However, buffers
which were already present will not be removed.
There is still one open problem: The files to be published are
visited twice, one for publishing them, a second time for creating the
index. Visiting causes some overhead, and we would like to limit this
overhead. For now, however, this is not done.
Org-mode does sometimes included CSS definitions directly
into an exported XHTML file. To pass validation tests
for XHTML, these sections need to be wrapped in
order to pass as CDATA, not PCDATA. This patch
(written by Sebastian Rose) does implement this change.
It also fixes some typos.

If I understand you correctly, then what we want to expose is the
"timefmt" that is put into the data file and then passed to gnuplot.
The following patch is a complete one against current which adds this
(it works for me, at least), and documents the new +PLOT option
behavior.
The one thing I'm not sure about is my method of passing the timefmt
parameter all the way into the temp file creation function. I made a
buffer-local variable there to do it. That seemed the least intrusive
way to accomplish this, but it seemed like poor practice. Thoughts?

mean, using customize).

This function only does its job if no side-by-side
window would be affected as well. Also, if
fit-window-to-buffer is not defined, use
shrink-window-if-larger-than-buffer instead.
When yanking a cut/copied subtree or a series of trees, even
the nomal yank key `C-y' does now adjust the level of the tree
to make it fit into the current outline position, without
loosing its identity, and without swallowing other subtrees.
This uses the command `org-past-subtree'. An additional
change in that command has been implemented: Normally, this
command picks the right outline level from the surrounding
*visible* headlines, and uses the smaller on. So it the
cursor is between a level 4 and a level 3 headline, the tree
will be pasted as level 3. Now, if the cursor is actually
*at* the beginning of a headline, the level of that headline
will be used. So lets say you have a tree like this:
* Level one
** Level two
(1)
(2)* Level one again
with (1) and (2) indicating possible cursor positions for the
insertion. When at (1), the tree will be pasted as level 2.
When at (2), it will be pasted as level 1.
If you do not like `C-y' to behave like this, configure the
variable `org-yank-adjusted-subtrees'.

Clock-related data are saved when exiting emacs ands restored when emacs
is restarted. The data saved include the contents of `org-clock-history',
and the running clock, if there is one.
To use this, you will need to add

or set those options to t in custom.
This patch requires the clock resume patch.

Allow org-clock-in-switch-to-state to be a function. This lets you have
different clocked in states for different TODO keyword sets, for example

C-c C-c still works with the cursor in a headline,
but I wanted a special binding as the default, mainly
in order to be able to set tags in a remember buffer.
The new default asks to open all those files in Emacs, for which
`auto-mode-alist' does contain an entry. The reasoning is that
Org-mode users are Emacs users and probably like to use exactly
this setup. The only exception configured as such by default is
that files with html or xhtml extensions will be opened using
the system default, most likely a browser.
(Okay, I always forget that C-x v v in Emacs does only
commit on a file per file basis. I should really use
the command line when committing several files.)
A list now ends when a line contains an indentation that is shorter than
the expected indentation of an item for this list.
`org-export-latex-list-beginning-re' renamed to `org-list-beginning-re'
and `org-list-item-begin' renamed to `org-list-item-beginning'.
Some code clean up: silent checkdoc, fix typos.
So far, we had mad invisible the line including the \n after it.
This is a bad idea. When the cursor is at the beginning of the
line that is preceded by an invisible line, the local text
properties are actually those of the invisible line
just before the current.
Now we make invisible the line together with the \n *before* it,
this should fix things all right.
* org.el (narrow-map): Bind `org-narrow-to-subtree' to "s" on the
new keymap `narrow-map' instead of binding "\C-xns".

The bug affected the exportation of commented subtree: case cannot be
ignored when checking for the COMMENT cookie ("Comment" is a frequent
word in french, and has a completely different meaning.)
trees that are marked with the ARCHIVE tag and even archive files
can now temporarily be included into an agenda view.
Press `v' in the agenda to get trees with ARCHIVE tags.
Press `C-u v' to get archive files included.
This bug was reported by Manuel Hermenegildo. There
were really two issues: The parsing of the FILETAGS line
was broken, and the function `org-get-tags-at' did ignore
these tags. Both problems are fixed now.
This only lead to a contributed file, this is neither robust nor fast.
But maybe throwing the existing code into a contrib file
will make someone come up with an idea.
Replace all occurrences of the format string "%d:%02d" with
org-time-clocksum-format, which contains the same string by default.
This allows anyone to customize the appearance of clock summaries.
For example:

Now we have separate ChangeLog files in the lisp and doc
directories. Also, in the lisp directory, all the old changes
have moved into ChangeLog.01.
These changes will help me to simplify synchronization with Emacs.
The #+STARTUP etc lines that define settings on a per-file
basis can now be collected in a separate file and included
with a line:
#+SETUPFILE: "/path/to/setup.org"
This has been a frequent request in the past, now it is
finally possible.
Because entering property value wit the command `org-set-property'
offers completion on existing values of the property,
space was treated as a completion command in the minibuffer.
This is now fixed. Also, completion is now case-insensitive here.
The *orgtbl-default-fmt* is a hook for orgtbl transformations to
ensure a destination-sensible default for columns not present in
a fmt plist. The leaving the value at nil changes no existing
behavior.

Passing explicit nils to leave out start and end strings feels
natural. Also, transforming org-mode tables into other org-mode
tables can use :tstart and :tend to specify directives, so I
don't want to change the default splice setting for those.

When there was a lone weekday abbreviation like "fri"
is was interpreted relative to the default date. I think
now this special case should always be relative to today.
This was a bug report from David Kritzberg.
These are implemented as part of plain lists, so a leading
"-" or "+" is still needed. Maybe this is not the most pretty
implementation, but it works without rewriting the quite
complex list formatting code. So all the list formatting
continues to work just fine. The description tag
is highlighted in bold, so still easy to spot.
The HTML exporter does export these already, the LaTeX
exporter still needs to be adapted.
Clock-related markers and agenda markers used to get lost
when editing a file using cut and paste. Now some cut
and past operations move the markers with them. In particular,
structure editing like moving subtrees up and down.
Also, when exiting a remember buffer with a running clock, the clock
can now be moved along with the entry to the target location.
There was a bug in the escaping code, and also the function doing the
escaping was not called for the headline, which can also be the source
of the summary.
Now it is possible to select also the current clocking task after
pressing C-u C-c C-x C-i. What will happen then is that this
entry will be clocked out, and then clocked in again.
Recently clocked tasks are now remembered as well as a default
task and an interrupted task.
There is no automatic clock-in yet.
Also, a number of bug fixes have sneaked into this patch,
sorry for the mess.
There is an old XEmacs bug with indentation in the presence of
an extent with an invisibility property. We work around this now
by turning the invisibility property off, temporarily.
You can slice a single table full of calculations in different ways
into separate destinations. Or you can format the table differently.
There are many fun and exciting possible uses.
A fancier implementation would scan the document *once* for the
set of destinations. That could help implement another function
to update all destinations from all sources.
Refactor orgtbl-to-generic; explicitly separate heading from body.
Support last-line specializers.
Allow functions for some orgtbl parameters.
Add a :remove-nil-lines parameter to orgtbl-to-generic.
There was a problem that complex fields need a pair of parenthesis
around them. For example, if one field is "a a" and another field
is "a+b", multiplication of the two gave "a^3+b" instead of "a^3+a^2 b".
Now variable replacement puts extra parenthesis around values.
Thomas is now the official author of org-mhe.el, he wrote most of it
and we finally have the FSF papers.
org-bbdb.el not includes `org-bbdb-anniversaries', to get anniversaries
in the BBDB database into the Org agenda.
So far only internal links that lead to a dedicated target where
converted correctly during HTML export. Now, also heuristic
links create a working jump in a file.
This is a new display mode in the agenda view. It appends a clock
table to the daily/weekly agenda view that covers clocked time
for the time span shown in the agenda, and also limited to the
files that were used to create the current view.
The default is now taken from the entry at point or the first
entry in the agenda, an can originate from a property, from
a #+COLUMNS line, or from the variable `org-columns-default-format'.
Now you can set this stuff directly from the org-mode file.
Documentation is still missing, this is a work-in-progress
commit and still needs check with Sebastian's script.
Bug fix with note taking when auto-repeating a task:
There was a problem if the state change already triggered the
recording of a time, then the request for a *note* in
`org-log-repeat' was ignored. Reported by Bernt Hansen.
The clocktable can now more easily select the correct time range
that should be considered when summing times. S-right and S-left
in the "#+BEGIN: clocktable" line allow to shift the time block around.
Also some code-cleanup.
`org-publish-get-base-files-1': get the proper list of files when
recursing thru a directory.
`org-publish-get-base-files: use the :exclude property to skip both
files and directories. This might be refined when the semantic of
publishing options gets simpler, but do this for now.
`org-publish-project': removed third arg of defalias to avoid
compatibility issue for Emacs 22.1.
This required changing the Makefile.
I also added a new program set-version.pl that can be used
to synchronize the version number in all core files of the
distribution, along with the web files.
